Aris Sapounakis, Ph.D.

ARISTIDIS (ARIS) SAPOUNAKIS was born in Athens in 1953. He studied Architecture in the National Technical University of Athens and he completed the Postgraduate course in Urban Design in Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. He acquired his Ph.D. from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh in 1985. The title of his doctorate thesis is ‘Environmental Information and Cognitive Needs’.

Aris Sapounakis is an engineer specializing in architecture as well as urban and environmental issues. Apart from domestic and commercial architectural projects, he has approached urban and regional development issues, protection and management of areas of cultural and environmental interest, homelessness and access to housing for vulnerable social groups as well as management of inner-city areas in crisis. During his 40-year experience as a consultant he has been involved in numerous competition valuations as well as environmental impact assessment studies mainly being concerned with issues of human settlements, cultural heritage and landscape preservation.

During the last 25 years he has been teaching Architecture and Urban Design in the Planning and Regional Development Department of the University of Thessaly from which he retired in September 2020.
